Accidentally Vegan Treats

To celebrate Veganuary, we have picked our favourite accidentally vegan treats so if you’re wondering what on earth vegans eat (and who doesn’t?!) this will point you in the right direction. If you’re a vegan, this should save you some time in the supermarket so you don’t have to scour the ingredients list when you’re desperate for a quick sugar fix.

1. Hobnobs 


Hobnobs! Who doesn’t love a good ol’ trusty hobnob? A resilient biscuit when dunking into a cup of tea, you can always count on a hobnob to hold its strength (unlike its unreliable cousin; the digestive.)

Please note though, that this is the plain hobnob variety only. Better than nothing though, isn’t it? Take what you can get, that’s what we say!

2.  Mr Kipling’s Treacle Tart

Fancy a bit of tart, treacle? Fear not vegan friends, Mr Kipling is here to save the day. A lot of products aren’t actually labelled vegan, so unless you’ve got a lot of spare time on your hands you might never have stumbled across this gem. Perfect for a Sunday afternoon dessert, we’re getting hungry just thinking about it!

(Note to self: don’t write food-related posts just before lunch.)

3. Chocolate

Arguably the most powerful food in the human diet; chocolate. A friend you can count on through the good times and the bad, from pacifying a forgotten birthday present (oops, sorry mum), to mending your broken heart, the sweet smooth richness of chocolate always saves the day.

If you like a sweet, creamy, and “milky” chocolate, our current obsession is Waitrose 1 Single Origin Dark Chocolate & Coconut. Very creamy, very delicious!

If you’re more of a savoury kinda person, we’ve got you covered. With a large number of crisps containing milk powder for flavouring, it can be a minefield knowing which crunchy potato snacks are vegan-friendly.

Luckily for us, Doritos Chilli Heatwave and Spicy Sweet Chili are an accidentally vegan treat!

5. Nature Valley Crunchy Granola Bars (Peanut Flavour)

If, like me, you’re hungry by 10am, or more accurately always hungry, then you’ll probably want something slightly more substantial and socially acceptable to eat to see you through until lunch (you may receive a few raised eyebrows if you open a treacle tart at 10am.)

If you don’t fancy a piece of fruit, then chomp down a Nature Valley Crunchy Granola Bar. The Peanut Butter flavour variety is vegan-friendly, and it contains a decent amount of sugar to give you that hit. Perfect.

So, there we have it folks, five different snacks which happen to be vegan but are loved by everyone. Now that you know there are a vast variety of vegan treats on the market, you might even (dare I say it) consider going vegan for the month. You never know!
